Elon Musk Has No Doubts – We Must Leave Earth!

Few minutes after 7 AM in the morning of 30 June 1908, big body of either planetary or cometary origin entered Earth’s atmosphere and exploded over the vast, mainly uninhabited area of Siberia. The destruction it caused was stunning: 60 million trees were uprooted in the area of 2,000 square kilometers, seismic shocks were detected all around the world and the subsequent fires were visible from the distance of hundreds of kilometers. The so-called Tunguska event took place in the Russian wasteland but let´s imagine that the body entered the atmosphere a few minutes earlier… In that case, it would annihilate Moscow and change the course of history.

It is interesting that the experience of events like Tunguska or the extinction of dinosaurs – anyhow it is just transferred from history – has so little impact on our way of thinking. The lesson of history is clear: cataclysmic events happen. Not very often, but they do happen from time to time and threaten to destroy our pure existence. Our civilization, proud of its technological advances and arrogantly considering itself to be the absolute masters of this planet, is under constant threat of its irreversible demise. Now you maybe think that it´s widely exaggerated as we do have tools to deal with an asteroid situation. However, we are far from there. Yes, it is true that there are theoretical procedures which we can use to defend our home planet against deadly asteroid but they are completely untried, extremely technologically demanding and request a lot of time to be realized. Especially the last condition can be a big problem if we will realize that the impact of an asteroid will happen not in hundreds of years but within weeks. And top of that, the planetary bodies are not the only danger. It can be also the virus or our own irresponsible behavior which can wipe the life on Earth out.

The entrepreneur, visionary, and billionaire Elon Musk is one of those who care about the risks for our existence. Elon Musk says that if there is a chance that the life on this planet can be destroyed, we should do all precautions we can to ensure the continuity of our existence. And the best insurance against the extinction is to found an enclave outside the Earth. It sounds like something from the science fiction and the very distant future but the stakes are very high and that´s why people like Elon Musk want to mobilize the society and get it to the common knowledge. It is also one of the reasons why Elon Musk is planning a mission to Mars – as a first step to be colonizing another world which – in other words – can mean the same as — to higher the chances for the survival of humankind.

As mentioned above, the survival of humankind is the critical reason Elon Musk was talking about when he mentioned the necessity to leave the Earth. And the truth is that it really can´t be more critical. The worst case scenario is definitive, irreversible destruction of all life on this planet. Even if there is only a slight chance of this to happen, the project of other planet colonization can give so much to us… Works on this will accelerate the technological advance which will do good for the whole mankind. It can also help us to overcome the differences and force people from different countries, ethnicities or religions to work in unity, without pointless fighting over those insignificant characteristics we use so often.

OK, we all know that even with the pressure of someone like Elon Musk, the global project of a colonization and terraforming of another planet will not start in a long, long time from now. The only way to create the conditions for a project like this to happen in distant future is to spread the knowledge of risks that are upon us and of the benefits of moving out. But first of all, ask yourself – have you ever thought of the possibility of the destruction of our race? Can you even imagine it? Before you can start convincing others to identify with the idea, you have to do it yourself, the same thing Elon Musk did…
